Tappan Community and City Information

Tappan is a hamlet located in the town of Orangetown in Rockland County, New York. It is located on the border with New Jersey and about 20 miles away from New York City.

According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000 Tappan has a population of more than 6,500 residents. The hamlet has a total land area of 2.8 square miles. The hamlet is located at an elevation of over 40 feet above sea level.

The racial demographics of Tappan are 82.27% White, 1.27% African American, 0.12% Native American, 13.51% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.48% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 6.36% of the population.

Tappan has more than 2,000 households, many of which are affluent. The median income for a household in the hamlet is $86,435, and the median income for a family is $91,827.

Tappan is home to the historic DeWint House, the oldest structure in the county which housed George Washington during the American Revolution. The hamlet has other historic sites dating back to the 18th century.
